Nick is an accomplished sculptor having started at the age of 11. His sculptures are sometimes made from cast and fabricated metals. Several of those examples are includes in the following photos. He is not afraid to express himself in ways that make people think using hidden meaning and commentaries. He is notorious for his nude figures of bronze that he calls narrations of life. There is on ongoing narration of over 70 recognizable political characters called " Our Times ". Those have been included for you to see also. And don't miss the " Rat Race " on the roof of the house or the giant steel " Brother "that is 10 feet tall.

Nick also showed us his self-built foundry and kiln where he works. He could not have been more gracious explaining things every step of the way.

Informal Critique

Tim Oliver graciously has a few artists from the art guild for an
informal critique of their works.

Sean Farrell

Guest Artist Sean Farrell

Our guest artist for June, 2007 was our own Sean Farrell, who is one of our life-time members. Sean is an accomplished artist who as a young starving artist spent lots of time just sitting in museums looking at the masters paintings and trying to figure out how they recreated. His expertise is in still-life which he does in oils. He takes many of his subjects from his own gardens and then arranges them in different vessels in his studio. He might take a flower from each one of these if it would fit in with what he has in mind. Many of his fruit paintings look so real that you might think that you could pluck them right off the canvas.

Sean was our guest artist at the QVCC exhibit in July of 2007 and has been instrumental in setting up a class for life drawing for students of that college and interested members of the Northeastern CT Art Guild. He sells his paintings in many of the galleries here in New England as well as around the world. We are privileged to have him as one of our members.

Sean Farrell

Two-man Show

Tim Oliver and David Stumpo have a two-man show in downtown Putnam, CT. Owner of Arts & Framing, Sheri Sochor, often encourages fellow art guild members to show there artwork at her shop and loft gallery.

Sheri is very helpful to all artists and a very gracious lady.

Pierre Theriault

Guest Artist Pierre Theriault

Pierre Theriault was our guest in April, 2007. He is an artist of many different mediums, but that night he taught us his techniques for using pastels. Following are notes taken: Put neutral paper on foamcore and smooth side and front For plein aire use something heavier than foamcore for the backing. Put in the darks first and lacquer or turpenoid to fill in the areas of under-painting. Let dry completely. Layer pastel on layer of pastel and blend each color and shape as you layer. Use light blue instead of white. Brush out the unwanted color and use a kneaded eraser very softly. New sticks are hard, Rembrandt medium, Sennelier are soft. Fine are used at the end for details.

Thanks to Pierre for coming and answering our questions on pastel painting.

Simple Elegance

Simple Elegance Tea Room Exhibit

An elegant venue for an exhibit, the Simple Elegance Tea Room in Thompson, CT, is where we hung out artwork to be seen and sold in March of 2007.

Pam Benton with artist friend Lynne Kokotiuk, both of Woodstock, CT are pictured on the left. Our photo gallery (linked below) includes more photographs of the artists and their entries.

Tom Krivacs

Guest Artist Tom Krivacs

On March 14, 2007, Tom Krivacs was our guest artist. Tom has a unique way of doing artwork using plasterboard. He binds the edges and primes it. Then he applies the plaster in various ways and lets it dry. When it is dry he uses glazes and applies them with heavy duty contractors rags ( they don't break down ). While the glaze is still wet he lightens the center of the picture and when that is dry he applies three coats of a clear satin finish. When Tom is done there is a vague and soft look to his creation, but usually something that is recognizable and beautiful.

Tom visited the members again in May, 2008 letting them try out this method for themselves. There was a lot of interest in this hands on workshop and Tom and wife, Kelly were only too happy to show them.
